Suze Orman

Suze Orman turned a waitressing job and a $50,000 loan from bakery customers into a career as one of America's best-known personal-finance voices. After rising through the ranks at Merrill Lynch and Prudential-Bache, she founded her own financial firm and then reached a mass audience with best-selling books like The 9 Steps to Financial Freedom and The Money Book for the Young, Fabulous & Broke. As host of The Suze Orman Show on CNBC from 2002 to 2015, she became famous for blunt, emotionally direct advice on debt, saving, and retirement, and she has been a persistent advocate for financial literacy, especially among women.

Suze Orman grew up in a one-bedroom apartment on Chicago's South Side, the daughter of immigrant parents who stressed hard work over financial comfort. She studied social work at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, graduating in 1973, then moved to Berkeley, California, where she waited tables at the Buttercup Bakery while hoping to open her own restaurant.

Regular customers pooled money to help her start a business, and in searching for a place to invest it she was hired as a trainee at Merrill Lynch in 1980. Orman proved a natural, rising quickly to become one of the firm's top producers and later a vice president at Prudential-Bache Securities. In 1987 she founded her own practice, the Suze Orman Financial Group, building a following around a plainspoken, emotionally candid approach to money.

Her 1997 book The 9 Steps to Financial Freedom became a bestseller and made her a national name. She followed it with titles including The Courage to Be Rich (1999), The Road to Wealth (2001), The Money Book for the Young, Fabulous & Broke (2005), Women & Money (2007), and The Ultimate Retirement Guide for 50+ (2020). From 2002 to 2015 she hosted The Suze Orman Show on CNBC, answering viewer questions and dispensing blunt guidance on debt, saving, and retirement; the program earned her two Daytime Emmy Awards.

Orman has also produced public-television specials and a podcast, and she has become a prominent voice for financial literacy, particularly for women. She has long argued for stronger protections in the credit and lending industries. She married her longtime partner, Kathy Travis, in 2010.
