Her mother, Sarah, managed the group that became Gladys Knight & the Pips, and her brother Merald "Bubba" Knight and cousins William Guest and James "Pip" Woods were among its early members. Knight sang in church and began performing with her family as a child; by her teens, the group was touring the Southern club circuit and learning to sharpen its harmonies and stage show night after night.
Their persistence paid off with "Every Beat of My Heart," a 1961 hit that established Knight as a lead singer with a gospel-inflected alto. "Neither One of Us (Wants to Be the First to Say Goodbye)" and "Midnight Train to Georgia" both became major hits; the latter topped the pop and R&B charts and won a Grammy. "Best Thing That Ever Happened to Me" followed, and the group remained a touring draw through the 1970s and 1980s.
Knight began a solo career as the Pips wound down, releasing albums such as Good Woman (1991) and Just for You (1994). She also worked as an actress, appearing in film and television projects including Tyler Perry's I Can Do Bad All by Myself (2009). Gladys Knight & the Pips were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1996, and Knight has won seven Grammy Awards across her work with the group and as a solo artist.
