Baby Names Loved Across Generations

Some names become closely associated with a particular generation, while others remain popular for much longer. Names like Walter, Harold, and Ralph were familiar choices for boys throughout much of the 20th century. Donald and Russell also enjoyed long periods of popularity.

Among girls, Helen, Dorothy, and Ruth were favorites of earlier generations. Names like Patricia and Barbara became especially familiar during the middle of the 20th century.

Others, including Rose, Marie, and Anne, have histories that extend far beyond American popularity charts. Their lasting appeal shows how traditional names can remain meaningful across generations.

What Makes a Name a Longtime Favorite?

Our Longtime Favorites collection uses U.S. Social Security Administration baby name records from 1880 through 2025.

To qualify, a name must have one continuous run among the 100 most popular names for its gender, lasting between 50 and 99 consecutive years.

Unlike Century-Long Favorites, which remained in the top 100 for at least 100 consecutive years, these names had shorter but still remarkable periods of popularity.

A longtime favorite doesn't necessarily remain popular today. Some names completed their top-100 runs decades ago, while others have more recent histories.

Could These Names Become Popular Again?

Baby naming trends often change as new generations rediscover names from the past.

Names like Frederick, Eugene, and Howard have a traditional feel that may appeal to parents looking beyond today's most popular choices.

For girls, Louise, Frances, and Martha offer familiar names with long histories. Their future popularity remains to be seen, but their earlier success is part of American naming history.
