What Does the Name Rose Mean?
Rose is the English form of Latin rosa, the word for the rose flower. Latin rosa is usually connected with Greek rhodon, whose older Aeolic form wrodon keeps a w sound; similar words appear in Armenian (vard) and in Old Persian. Because that shape turns up in languages that are not closely related, the word is often described as one that spread through trade and contact around the eastern Mediterranean and western Asia rather than through a single inherited root. Its deeper origin is not settled.
As a personal name, Rose carries the meaning of the flower itself rather than a separate etymology. It is also used as a short form of longer names such as Rosalind and Rosamund, but those names have their own Germanic origins and are unrelated to rosa.
Rose Name History & Origins
Rose came into English through Old French, where the flower word and the personal name had the same form. The name appears in medieval England as a woman's name. The same Latin word traveled with the name into other European languages, giving Italian, Spanish, and Portuguese Rosa and German and Dutch Rose.
Two traditions gave the rose wide familiarity in Europe. In Christian devotion the Virgin Mary was called rosa mystica, and the rosary takes its name from Latin rosarium, "rose garden." In England the white rose of York and the red rose of Lancaster were the badges of the rival houses in the fifteenth-century Wars of the Roses, and the later Tudor rose joined the two.
Saints who bore the name include Rose of Viterbo in the thirteenth century and Rose of Lima in the seventeenth, the first person born in the Americas to be canonized. In Spanish- and Portuguese-speaking countries the form Rosa is standard, while Rose remains the usual English spelling.
