Boy Names Loved Across Generations
Longtime favorite boy names tell the story of changing naming traditions in America. Some were especially popular in the early 20th century, while others became favorites in more recent decades.
Names like Walter, Harold, Ernest, and Clarence bring to mind earlier generations. Other traditional choices, including Frederick, Alfred, and Leonard, have histories that extend well beyond American popularity records.
Later favorites such as Steven, Kevin, Brian, and Jeffrey became familiar names in the second half of the 20th century. Joshua, Matthew, and Ryan also enjoyed long periods near the top of the charts.
Short and Traditional Boy Names
This collection includes several short names that remained popular for decades. Roy, Ray, Fred, Lee, and Earl are simple, familiar choices with strong ties to earlier generations.
Longer names such as Christopher, Jonathan, Timothy, and Nicholas offer a different style. Their popularity shows that both short and longer names can remain favorites across many decades.
What Makes a Boy Name a Longtime Favorite?
Our Longtime Favorites collection uses U.S. Social Security Administration baby name records from 1880 through 2025.
To qualify, a boy name must have one continuous run among the 100 most popular names for boys lasting between 50 and 99 consecutive years.
A longtime favorite doesn't necessarily remain in the top 100 today. Some names completed their popularity runs decades ago, while others remained popular into more recent years.
These names fall between our Established Favorites, which have 30 to 49 consecutive top-100 years, and Century-Long Favorites, which have at least 100 consecutive years.
Could These Boy Names Become Popular Again?
Baby naming trends often change as younger generations rediscover names from the past.
Names such as Eugene, Howard, Herbert, and Chester have a traditional feel that may appeal to parents looking beyond today's most popular choices.
Other longtime favorites, including Charlie, Louis, and Martin, offer familiar sounds and long naming histories. Whether they rise or fall in the future, their decades of popularity have already earned them a place in American naming history.
