Pattinson grew up in Barnes, southwest London, the son of Clare, who worked for a modeling agency, and Richard Pattinson, a dealer in vintage cars. He attended Tower House School and Harrodian School, and began acting with the Barnes Theatre Company in amateur productions. As a teenager he also worked as a model, but acting became his focus after early stage performances led to professional auditions.
His film breakthrough came as Cedric Diggory in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire (2005). He then played the vampire Edward Cullen in Twilight (2008), a role that made him a teen idol and carried him through four sequels ending in 2012. During that period he appeared in Little Ashes (2008) as Salvador Dalí, Remember Me (2010), and Water for Elephants (2011).
After the Twilight series ended, Pattinson moved toward filmmakers with distinctive styles. He starred in David Cronenberg's Cosmopolis (2012), David Michôd's The Rover (2014), and James Gray's The Lost City of Z (2016). His role as a desperate bank robber in the Safdie brothers' Good Time (2017) drew wide critical praise, followed by High Life (2018) and Robert Eggers's The Lighthouse (2019).
He appeared in Christopher Nolan's Tenet (2020) and played Bruce Wayne and Batman in Matt Reeves's The Batman (2022), a noir-influenced take on the character. His other credits include The King (2019), Waiting for the Barbarians (2020), and The Devil All the Time (2020). In 2025 he starred in Bong Joon Ho's science-fiction film Mickey 17.
Beyond acting, Pattinson has been a spokesperson for Dior Homme and has recorded music, contributing the songs Never Think and Let Me Sign to the Twilight soundtrack. He has generally kept his private life out of the public eye.
