Stephen Colbert

Stephen Colbert grew up in Charleston, South Carolina, the youngest of eleven children in a Catholic family. His father, James, was a physician, and the household placed a strong emphasis on faith and education. When Colbert was ten, his father and two of his brothers died in a commercial plane crash in 1974, a loss that shaped much of his outlook and later comedy.

He studied theater at Northwestern University and graduated in 1986, then moved to Chicago to pursue improv. He trained and performed with the Second City troupe, where he worked alongside Steve Carell, Amy Sedaris, and Paul Dinello. The group created the sketch series Exit 57 and later the cult comedy Strangers with Candy, which sharpened Colbert's talent for playing earnest, oblivious characters.

From 1997 to 2005, Colbert was a correspondent on The Daily Show with Jon Stewart, delivering deadpan field reports that made him a fan favorite. In 2005 he launched The Colbert Report, a spin-off in which he portrayed a pompous conservative pundit. The show ran for nine years and won numerous Emmy Awards, and it produced bestselling books including I Am America (And So Can You!).

In 2015, Colbert succeeded David Letterman as host of The Late Show with Stephen Colbert on CBS. He also wrote the 2012 book America Again and has appeared in films and voice roles. He and his wife, Evelyn McGee-Colbert, married in 1993 and have three children.
