Diana Frances Spencer was the fourth of five children born to John Spencer, then Viscount Althorp and later the 8th Earl Spencer, and his wife, Frances Roche. She grew up on the Sandringham estate in Norfolk and later at the family seat at Althorp, and her parents' marriage broke down when she was a child. She attended Riddlesworth Hall and then West Heath School in Kent, followed by a finishing school in Switzerland. Before her engagement she worked in London as a nanny and a nursery school assistant.
She met Prince Charles, the eldest son of Queen Elizabeth II, in the late 1970s, and their engagement was announced in February 1981. They married at St Paul's Cathedral in July 1981 in a ceremony watched by a global television audience. The couple had two sons, William, born in 1982, and Harry, born in 1984. Diana's youth, style, and apparent warmth made her a media sensation, and she quickly became one of the most famous women in the world, though the intense scrutiny also strained her marriage and her private life.
She directed much of her public work toward causes that were then uncomfortable for the royal family. In 1987 she opened Britain's first purpose-built HIV/AIDS ward at Middlesex Hospital and was photographed shaking hands with AIDS patients, helping to counter the fear that the disease could be spread by casual contact. She also supported organizations for the homeless, children, and people with leprosy. In 1997 she traveled to Angola and later Bosnia to draw attention to the danger of landmines, working with the HALO Trust and the Red Cross.
Her marriage deteriorated publicly, and the couple announced their separation in 1992. She gave a candid television interview in 1995, and the divorce was finalized in 1996, after which she lost the title Her Royal Highness but remained Diana, Princess of Wales. She continued her charity work, and her high-profile relationships drew constant press attention.
Diana died on 31 August 1997 from injuries in a car crash in the Pont de l'Alma tunnel in Paris; her companion Dodi Fayed and the driver also died. Her funeral at Westminster Abbey drew enormous crowds and a vast television audience, and she was buried at the Spencer family estate at Althorp. Her sons, her charity campaigns, and the public reaction to her death left a lasting mark on the British monarchy and on how the media covers public figures.
