Stallone's early life was shaped by a difficult childhood. His father, Frank Stallone Sr., worked as a hairdresser, and his mother, Jackie, later became known as an astrologer and ran a fitness business. A forceps delivery at birth left him with partial facial paralysis and slurred speech, injuries that marked his youth. He spent part of his childhood in Maryland, where he struggled in school and found outlets in sports and, eventually, acting.

He followed with First Blood (1982), introducing the tormented veteran John Rambo, and built a reputation as an action star through the 1980s with sequels to both Rocky and Rambo, as well as films such as Cliffhanger and Demolition Man. He also directed several entries in the Rocky series and later appeared in the ensemble action franchise The Expendables.

After a stretch of mixed box-office results, Stallone returned to Rocky Balboa in Creed (2015), playing the aging fighter as a mentor to Michael B. Jordan's character; the performance earned him an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor. In his personal life, he has been married three times, including to actress Brigitte Nielsen, and since 1997 to Jennifer Flavin. His brother Frank Stallone is a musician and actor, and his son Sage, from his first marriage, died in 2012.
