The eldest child of Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip, Charles grew up inside the British royal family's public routines. He attended Gordonstoun in Scotland and later Trinity College, Cambridge, where he studied history, archaeology, and anthropology. In 1969, after being named Prince of Wales in 1958, he was formally invested at Caernarfon Castle in Wales. He then trained as a Royal Navy officer, serving from 1971 to 1976 and commanding the minehunter HMS Bronington.

Charles was the longest-serving heir apparent in British history, holding the title Prince of Wales for nearly 64 years. He became king on 8 September 2022 after Queen Elizabeth II's death and was crowned at Westminster Abbey on 6 May 2023.
