Leonardo DiCaprio grew up in Los Angeles, the only child of George DiCaprio, an underground comic artist and distributor, and Irmelin Indenbirken, a legal secretary. His parents divorced when he was very young, and he was raised largely by his mother. Interested in performing from childhood, he began auditioning for commercials and television roles in his early teens, appearing in advertisements and small parts before landing a recurring role on the sitcom Growing Pains in the early 1990s.
His film breakthrough came in 1993 with This Boy's Life, opposite Robert De Niro, and What's Eating Gilbert Grape, in which he played a developmentally disabled boy and earned an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor. He followed with The Basketball Diaries and a starring turn in Baz Luhrmann's Romeo + Juliet, then became a global star as Jack Dawson in James Cameron's Titanic (1997).
Rather than repeat Titanic, DiCaprio pursued roles with directors including Martin Scorsese, starring in Gangs of New York, The Aviator, The Departed, Shutter Island, and The Wolf of Wall Street. The Aviator brought him a Best Actor nomination, and The Departed won the Academy Award for Best Picture. He also starred in Catch Me If You Can, Blood Diamond, and Inception.
In 2015, DiCaprio played frontiersman Hugh Glass in Alejandro González Iñárritu's The Revenant, a physically demanding role that earned him the Academy Award for Best Actor. He has since appeared in Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, Don't Look Up, and Killers of the Flower Moon, and has produced films and documentaries through his production company, Appian Way.
DiCaprio has been a prominent environmental advocate. He founded the Leonardo DiCaprio Foundation in 1998 to support conservation projects, produced climate documentaries such as The 11th Hour and Before the Flood, and was named a United Nations Messenger of Peace for climate change in 2014. His philanthropic work has focused on biodiversity, ocean conservation, and renewable energy.
