Daniel Radcliffe

Daniel Radcliffe played Harry Potter in all eight films adapted from J.K. Rowling's bestselling novels, beginning the role at age eleven and finishing in 2011. Growing up on screen as the series became a worldwide hit, he then deliberately widened his range. He has appeared on stage in Equus and How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying, in films such as Kill Your Darlings and Swiss Army Man, and on television in Miracle Workers. In 2024 he won a Tony Award for his performance in the Broadway revival of Merrily We Roll Along.

Radcliffe grew up in London as the only child of Alan Radcliffe, a literary agent, and Marcia Gresham, a casting director. He attended Sussex House School and City of London School, where he acted in school productions. His professional break came at ten, when he played the young David Copperfield in a 1999 BBC adaptation of Charles Dickens's novel. That performance led to an audition for a much larger role.

In 2000, after a lengthy casting search, he was chosen to play Harry Potter in Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone. The film opened in 2001 and became a worldwide hit; he went on to headline all eight installments through Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - Part 2 in 2011. The role made him famous, but he has spoken candidly about the pressure of growing up on screen and about his drinking during the later films, which he stopped in 2010.

Seeking to avoid being defined only by Harry Potter, Radcliffe moved between stage and independent film. In 2007 he starred in Equus in London's West End and later on Broadway, and in 2011 he led the Broadway musical How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying. His post-Potter films include The Woman in Black, Kill Your Darlings, Swiss Army Man, Imperium, and Escape from Pretoria. On television he starred in the comedy Miracle Workers and played the title role in Weird: The Al Yankovic Story, earning an Emmy nomination.

Radcliffe returned to Broadway in Merrily We Roll Along and won the 2024 Tony Award for Best Featured Actor in a Musical. He and actress Erin Darke, his partner since they met on Kill Your Darlings, have a son born in 2023. He supports charities including Demelza Hospice Care for Children and The Trevor Project, and has advocated for LGBTQ+ rights.
