The son of a scrap-metal dealer and a small-business owner, Hunnam grew up in a village in Cumbria, in northern England, after his parents divorced when he was young. He got his first screen experience in the children's series Byker Grove, after a production manager for the show noticed him while he was out shopping. He went on to appear in the 1999 film Whatever Happened to Harold Smith? before landing the part that made his name in Britain.
That part was Nathan Maloney, a teenage schoolboy, in the controversial Channel 4 drama Queer as Folk (1999), which brought him wide attention at home. He then moved to the United States and built a steady film career with roles in Nicholas Nickleby (2002), Cold Mountain (2003), Green Street (2005), and Alfonso Cuarón's Children of Men (2006), gradually establishing himself in Hollywood.
His defining role came in 2008, when he was cast as Jackson "Jax" Teller, the vice president and eventual president of a California outlaw motorcycle club, in the FX series Sons of Anarchy. The show ran for seven seasons until 2014 and made him a leading man. He moved into bigger film roles, including the science-fiction action film Pacific Rim (2013), Guillermo del Toro's gothic romance Crimson Peak (2015), and the adventure epic The Lost City of Z (2016), in which he played the British explorer Percy Fawcett. He was cast as Christian Grey in Fifty Shades of Grey but withdrew in 2013 because of his commitment to Sons of Anarchy.
Hunnam went on to play King Arthur in Guy Ritchie's King Arthur: Legend of the Sword (2017) and the title role in a remake of Papillon (2017), and he appeared in Ritchie's crime film The Gentlemen (2019), the Netflix drama Triple Frontier (2019), the Apple TV+ series Shantaram (2022), and Zack Snyder's Rebel Moon (2023). Off screen he is known for guarding his privacy; he has been in a long-term relationship with jewelry designer Morgana McNelis since 2005 and has spoken about his interest in Buddhist philosophy and meditation.
