Nora Roberts

Nora Roberts is one of the most commercially successful romance novelists in the United States. She broke into publishing with Irish Thoroughbred in 1981 and went on to write best-selling series including the MacGregors, the Chesapeake Bay Saga, and the Bride Quartet. Under the pseudonym J.D. Robb, she writes the futuristic In Death series, launched with Naked in Death in 1995. Roberts was the first writer inducted into the Romance Writers of America Hall of Fame, and her books have regularly appeared on the New York Times bestseller list.

The youngest of five children, Nora Roberts married at eighteen, had two sons, and wrote in the evenings while managing a household. In 1979, confined at home during a blizzard, she began drafting a romance novel. She sold her first manuscript to Silhouette, which published Irish Thoroughbred in 1981 under the name Nora Roberts.

Roberts quickly became one of the most prolific writers of short romance novels, producing dozens of titles for Silhouette and building the popular MacGregor family series. During the 1980s and 1990s she expanded into longer standalone romance novels, including Public Secrets, Montana Sky, and River's End. Her output and commercial success made her a fixture on bestseller lists, and she became the first author inducted into the Romance Writers of America Hall of Fame.

In 1995 she introduced a second identity, J.D. Robb, with Naked in Death. That novel launched the futuristic In Death series, following New York City police lieutenant Eve Dallas; the series has continued for decades and brought Roberts a large readership beyond traditional romance. Her other series include the Chesapeake Bay Saga, the Bride Quartet, and the Chronicles of the One.

Roberts married Bruce Wilder in 1985, and the couple later opened Turn the Page Bookstore in Boonsboro, Maryland, and restored the town's historic Inn BoonsBoro. Her books have sold hundreds of millions of copies worldwide, and she has continued to publish new novels in the 2020s, including Inheritance (2023).
