Lamberton came to writing through an unusual route. Before his imprisonment, he worked as a schoolteacher in Arizona. In the late 1980s, a conviction for sexual conduct with a minor ended his teaching career and led to a prison sentence. He served more than a decade in Arizona state prisons.
Prison gave Lamberton an unlikely vantage point on the Sonoran Desert. He began making careful notes on the plants, animals, weather, and seasonal rhythms visible from prison grounds, turning confinement into a sustained course in natural history. Those observations became Wilderness and Razor Wire: A Naturalist's Observations from Prison (2000). The memoir won the 2001 Western States Book Award and brought him readers beyond Arizona.
He continued to write after his release. Chiricahua Mountains: Bridging the Borders of Wildness (2003) examined a rugged range in southeastern Arizona, while Beyond Desert Walls: Essays from Prison (2005) returned to the themes of incarceration and nature. Dry River: Stories of Life, Water, and Death from the Desert (2009) considered the fragile waterways of the region. Across these books, Lamberton writes as a naturalist for whom close attention to a place is both a discipline and a way of surviving it.
