Matt Damon

Matt Damon is an American actor and screenwriter who broke through with Good Will Hunting (1997), which he co-wrote with Ben Affleck and for which they shared an Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay. He became a leading man in Saving Private Ryan, the Ocean's Eleven series, and the Bourne thrillers, and earned praise for The Talented Mr. Ripley, The Departed, and The Martian. Damon also co-founded Water.org, a nonprofit focused on safe water access, and has produced films through Pearl Street Films.

Damon and his brother, Kyle, were raised by their mother, Nancy Carlsson-Paige, a professor of early childhood education, and their father, Kent Damon, a stockbroker. Their parents divorced when Damon was young. He attended Harvard University, studied English, and left before graduating to pursue acting; a small part in Mystic Pizza (1988) marked his film debut.

Early credits included School Ties (1992) and Courage Under Fire (1996), but his breakthrough came with Good Will Hunting (1997), a screenplay he wrote with his friend Ben Affleck. The film, about a gifted young janitor, earned the pair the Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay and made Damon a star; he also received a Best Actor nomination. He followed it with Saving Private Ryan (1998), The Talented Mr. Ripley (1999), and the Ocean's Eleven series, beginning in 2001.

Damon became closely associated with the Bourne franchise, playing amnesiac assassin Jason Bourne in The Bourne Identity (2002) and its sequels. He starred in Martin Scorsese's The Departed (2006) and earned a Best Supporting Actor nomination for Clint Eastwood's Invictus (2009). His performance as a stranded astronaut in The Martian (2015) brought another Academy Award nomination and a Golden Globe win. Later roles included Leslie Groves in Oppenheimer (2023) and Sonny Vaccaro in Air (2023).

Offscreen, Damon co-founded Water.org with Gary White; the organization works to expand access to safe water and sanitation. He has also produced films through Pearl Street Films, the company he formed with Affleck. In 2005 he married Luciana Barroso; they have three daughters together, and he is also stepfather to her daughter from an earlier relationship.
