Bill Bradley

Bradley grew up in a small town and became a high school basketball standout before attending Princeton, where he became the Tigers' all-time leading scorer and led the team to the 1965 NCAA Final Four. His 58-point performance in the tournament's third-place game set a Final Four record, and he was named the event's Most Outstanding Player. After graduating, he won a Rhodes Scholarship and studied at Oxford, delaying his professional career.

He joined the New York Knicks in 1967 and spent his entire ten-year NBA career with the franchise. A disciplined, team-oriented forward, he contributed to the Knicks' championship teams in 1970 and 1973 and was named an NBA All-Star in 1973. The Knicks retired his No. 24, and he was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 1983.

After retiring from basketball, Bradley turned to politics. He won election to the U.S. Senate from New Jersey in 1978 and served three terms, from 1979 to 1997. On the Senate Finance Committee, he worked on tax reform and was involved in the Tax Reform Act of 1986. He also became known for advocating campaign finance reform and for writing about politics and sports.

Bradley sought the Democratic presidential nomination in 2000, emphasizing campaign finance reform, health care, and poverty. He lost the nomination to Vice President Al Gore. His books include Life on the Run (1976), a memoir of his Knicks years; The Fair Tax (1984); Time Present, Time Past (1996); and The New American Story (2007). After leaving the Senate, he worked as a corporate adviser and remained involved in public policy debates.
