Arkady Strugatsky

Arkady Natanovich Strugatsky spent his childhood in Leningrad, where his father, Natan Strugatsky, worked as an art historian. His education was interrupted by World War II. Evacuated from Leningrad during the siege, he was later drafted into the Soviet army and trained as a military translator. He graduated from the Military Institute of Foreign Languages in Moscow in 1949 and then served as an army translator before returning to Moscow to work as an editor and translator.

In the mid-1950s he began writing science fiction and soon formed a writing partnership with his younger brother Boris, an astronomer. Their first novel, The Land of Crimson Clouds, appeared in 1959. Over the next three decades they produced a stream of influential books, including Noon: 22nd Century, Hard to Be a God, Monday Begins on Saturday, The Snail on the Slope, Roadside Picnic, and Definitely Maybe. Their work combined space adventure and satire with philosophical questions about progress, power, and human nature, and it often challenged Soviet censorship.

Among the brothers' most durable works was Roadside Picnic, which became the basis for Andrei Tarkovsky's 1979 film Stalker; Hard to Be a God was later adapted by director Aleksei German. The brothers' books were translated into many languages and acquired a large following outside the Soviet Union. Arkady died in Moscow in 1991; Boris continued to write and edit their work, and their novels remained widely read in Russia and abroad.
