Colin Firth

Firth grew up in a family of academics. His father, Robert, lectured in history, and his mother, Shirley, taught comparative religion; both had trained as teachers and spent several years working in Nigeria, where Colin lived as a young child. The family later settled in Hampshire, in southern England. As a teenager he acted in school productions and played in a rock band before deciding to pursue acting seriously, training at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama in Glasgow.

He made his professional stage debut in the West End production of Another Country in 1984 and appeared in the film version. Television and film roles followed, but his breakthrough came in 1995 when he played Fitzwilliam Darcy in the BBC's adaptation of Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice. The performance made him a household name, helped by a much-discussed scene in which Darcy emerges from a lake.

Firth moved easily between romantic comedy and serious drama. He played Mark Darcy, a modern echo of his Austen character, in Bridget Jones's Diary (2001) and its sequels, and appeared in the ensemble comedy Love Actually (2003). A turn as a grieving professor in A Single Man (2009) earned him his first Academy Award nomination. The next year he won the Best Actor Oscar for The King's Speech, playing King George VI as he struggles to overcome a stammer. He drew further praise for the Cold War thriller Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy (2011) and later played the spy mentor Harry Hart in Kingsman: The Secret Service (2014) and its sequel.

Off screen, Firth was married to Italian film producer Livia Giuggioli from 1997 until their separation in 2019; the couple have two sons, and he has another son from an earlier relationship with actress Meg Tilly. He was appointed a CBE in 2011 for services to drama.
