What Does the Name Zohan Mean?
Zohan is a masculine given name used in Israel and in Jewish communities. Name references most often treat it as a variant of the Hebrew name Zohar (זוהר), which comes from a Hebrew word for "splendor," "radiance," or "brightness." In biblical Hebrew the same word describes a shining light, and Zohar is also the title of the central book of Jewish mysticism.
The link to Zohar is the usual explanation rather than a firmly documented derivation, so the exact etymology is uncertain. Names of similar sound exist in Slavic, Arabic, and Persian, but there is no solid basis for treating Zohan as a form of any of them.
Zohan Name History & Origins
Zohar became a personal name in modern Hebrew, where it is given to both boys and girls. Zohan appears as a related masculine form used in Israel. Names of this type were revived or newly coined as given names during the modern period, when Hebrew was reestablished as a spoken language, so Zohan belongs to that layer of Hebrew naming rather than to ancient tradition.
The name drew wide notice in the English-speaking world as the title character of the 2008 comedy You Don't Mess with the Zohan, played by Adam Sandler. That film use is a well-known modern association, not the source of the name.
