Zayn is an established Arabic given name. It appears in classical Arabic naming both alone and in honorific compounds, among them Zayn al-ʿAbidin, a title of ʿAli ibn al-Husayn, an early Shia imam who died in the early eighth century. Through Arabic and Islamic culture the name spread across the Middle East, North Africa, and South Asia, and it is now used as well by Muslim families in Europe and North America.
In the English-speaking world, Zane is first a surname. The Zane family of colonial and early federal America included Ebenezer Zane, the surveyor and frontiersman for whom Zanesville, Ohio, is named. The novelist Zane Grey (1872 - 1939) was born Pearl Zane Grey in Zanesville, where Zane was a family name, and he went by Zane rather than Pearl.
As a first name in English, Zane has been in use since the nineteenth century. Because it sounds the same as Zayn, the surname-derived name and the Arabic name now share a single common spelling in English, and the two strands are difficult to separate in ordinary usage.
