Zyrian is an English form of the Russian зыряне (zyryane), the name Russians traditionally used for the Komi, a Finno-Ugric people of northern European Russia. It is an exonym, a name applied from outside. The origin of the word itself is uncertain: one explanation traces it to a Finnic or Permic term for an edge, border, or out-of-the-way place, and another to a local river or settlement name, but no single derivation is accepted. The Komi's own name for themselves, коми (komi), is a separate word, usually explained as an old term for a person or people. Zyrian therefore means, in effect, "one of the Komi," and it does not carry a phrase meaning such as "light" or "grace."

Russian sources used зыряне for the Komi, who lived along the Vychegda, Pechora, and Mezen rivers and their tributaries in the far north of European Russia. The word entered Western European writing as Zyrian, also spelled Zyryan. In nineteenth- and early twentieth-century linguistics it named the language of the northern Komi, now called Komi-Zyrian to distinguish it from Komi-Permyak, the variety spoken farther south around Perm.
The Komi were Christianized through the mission of Stephen of Perm, who created the Old Permic script, sometimes called Abur, in the fourteenth century; it was later abandoned in favor of Cyrillic writing. In Soviet-era scholarship the Komi were divided into Komi-Zyrians and Komi-Permyaks, and the self-designation Komi gradually replaced Zyrian in official use. The Russian family name Zyryanov comes from the same ethnonym. In English, Zyrian is also used occasionally as a given name, evidently taken from the ethnonym or from the surname Zyryanov.
