What Does the Name Zaire Mean?

Zaire is a name of Kikongo origin meaning "river," commonly explained as "the river that swallows all rivers." Kikongo is a Bantu language of central Africa, spoken in the region of the old Kingdom of Kongo along the lower Congo River. The source word usually cited is nzadi (also recorded as nzere), the Kikongo term for the great river itself. Portuguese navigators who reached that coast in the late fifteenth century wrote the word in forms such as Zaire, and that spelling passed into other European languages as a name for the river. The literal meaning of the Kikongo word is simply "river"; the longer phrase is a customary, figurative gloss on the river's size rather than a word-for-word translation.

Zaire Name History & Origins

The word Zaire entered European use through Portuguese exploration of the African coast. Diogo Cão reached the mouth of the great river in the early 1480s, and Portuguese writers and mapmakers used Zaire and similar spellings for the river over the following centuries. The rival name Congo, taken from the Kingdom of Kongo and its people, gradually became the standard English name for the river.

In 1971 President Mobutu Sese Seko renamed the Democratic Republic of the Congo the Republic of Zaire, drawing on the older African-derived name of the river. The country kept that name until 1997, when it reverted to Congo after Mobutu's fall.

As a personal name, Zaire is found chiefly in the United States and is given most often to boys. It has been borne by public figures such as Zaire Franklin, a professional football player, and Zaire Wade, a basketball player and son of Dwyane Wade. The French spelling Zaïre is also the title of Voltaire's 1732 tragedy, a literary use whose connection to the African-derived name is unclear.
