What Does the Name Gael Mean?
Gael comes from the name the Gaelic-speaking peoples of Ireland and Scotland used for themselves: Old Irish Goídel, which developed into Scottish Gaelic Gàidheal and Irish Gaedheal. The usual explanation is that Old Irish Goídel was borrowed from a Brittonic word, seen in Welsh Gwyddel ('Irishman'), whose older sense may have been 'raider' or 'woodsman'. The deeper origin is not settled, so the safest description is the plain ethnic one: a Gael is a person of Gaelic speech or descent.
In France the masculine name Gaël, with the feminine Gaëlle, is understood in the same Celtic sense. A separate Hebrew origin, connecting the name to the root ga'al ('to redeem'), is sometimes suggested, but it is not the source of the Gaelic word and is not firmly established.
Gael Name History & Origins
The English word Gael entered the language as a borrowing from Scottish Gaelic Gàidheal, with the ae spelling an English form. The same root gave the names of the three Goidelic languages: Irish Gaeilge, Scottish Gaelic Gàidhlig, and Manx Gaelg. In medieval Irish tradition the Gaels were traced to an ancestor called Goídel Glas, and storytellers tied the people's name to him; that genealogy is legend, not the word's linguistic history.
Gael is used as a given name in Ireland and Scotland. In France it appears as Gaël, with Gaëlle for girls, a form found in Brittany and elsewhere and generally understood as referring to the Gaels. The name is also in use in Spanish-speaking countries. Because the Irish, Scottish, French, and Spanish uses all draw on the same Gaelic word, they are forms of one name rather than separate inventions.
