Raised in Phoenix, Arizona, Meyer was one of six children in a Mormon family. She attended Brigham Young University, where she earned a bachelor's degree in English. In 1994 she married Christian Meyer, and the couple eventually settled in Arizona and raised three sons. Before turning to fiction, Meyer worked as a receptionist and then as a stay-at-home mother.
The idea for Twilight came to Meyer in a vivid dream in 2003. She wrote about Bella Swan, a teenage girl who moves to Forks, Washington, and falls in love with Edward Cullen, a vampire. Little, Brown published Twilight in 2005. The novel became a bestseller and led to three sequels: New Moon (2006), Eclipse (2007), and Breaking Dawn (2008). The series sold more than 100 million copies worldwide and helped drive the young-adult fiction boom of the late 2000s.
The books were adapted into a five-film franchise beginning with Twilight in 2008, starring Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson. Meyer also published The Host, an adult science-fiction novel, in 2008, and The Chemist, a thriller, in 2016. A partial draft of Midnight Sun, a retelling of Twilight from Edward's perspective, leaked online in 2008; Meyer delayed the project and finally published the completed novel in 2020. She also released the novella The Short Second Life of Bree Tanner in 2010 and Life and Death: Twilight Reimagined in 2015.
