Sean Connery grew up in a working-class household; his father worked in a factory and as a truck driver, and his mother was a cleaner. He left school early and held a string of jobs, including a stint in the Royal Navy that ended because of health problems. Back in civilian life he worked as a lifeguard and a coffin polisher while building his physique as a bodybuilder, and his physical presence helped him find work in a touring production of South Pacific and then in small television and film roles.

His breakthrough came when producers Albert R. Broccoli and Harry Saltzman cast him as James Bond in Dr. No (1962). Connery's Bond combined toughness, wit, and a palpable physical threat, and the film's success turned the character into a global franchise. He starred in six official Bond films for the producers; From Russia with Love, Goldfinger, Thunderball, You Only Live Twice, and Diamonds Are Forever followed. He returned to the role in the separate production Never Say Never Again (1983).

Eager to avoid being confined to Bond, Connery took varied roles in films such as Alfred Hitchcock's Marnie (1964), John Huston's The Man Who Would Be King (1975), and Brian De Palma's The Untouchables (1987). His performance as the veteran Chicago policeman Jim Malone in the last won him the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor. He continued to take prominent roles in the 1990s, including The Hunt for Red October, The Rock, and Entrapment, and he was knighted in 2000.

Connery's final screen role was in The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen (2003), and he confirmed his retirement in 2006. He was married to actress Diane Cilento, with whom he had a son, Jason, and later to Micheline Roquebrune. He died in 2020 at age 90.
