Raised in New York City's East Harlem and the Bronx by Puerto Rican parents, Marc Anthony grew up surrounded by music; his father was a musician, and he was named after the Mexican singer Marco Antonio Muñiz. He began singing as a child and, in the late 1980s, worked as a background vocalist and songwriter for other artists, including the group Menudo, while developing his own style.
His early Spanish-language album Otra Noche appeared in 1993, but his breakthrough came when he turned to salsa with producer Sergio George. Todo a Su Tiempo (1995) and Contra la Corriente (1997) made him a star of tropical Latin music, and Contra la Corriente earned him a Grammy Award for Best Tropical Latin Performance. In 1999 he released his English-language album Marc Anthony, whose single "I Need to Know" brought him a wider pop following.
Anthony expanded into acting, appearing in films including Bringing Out the Dead (1999) and Man on Fire (2004), and he took the lead role of salsa singer Héctor Lavoe in El Cantante (2007). He continued releasing Spanish-language records, including Iconos (2010), and scored a major international hit with "Vivir Mi Vida" in 2013. Over his career he has won multiple Grammy and Latin Grammy Awards and has sold millions of records worldwide.
His personal life has drawn public attention as well. He was married to Dayanara Torres and later to Jennifer Lopez, with whom he had twins, and he has children from those and other relationships. He married Nadia Ferreira in 2023. Beyond performing, Anthony has worked as a producer and has been active in charitable causes.
