Quentin Tarantino

Quentin Tarantino is an American director and screenwriter whose genre-blending films reshaped independent cinema in the 1990s and beyond. After working as a video-store clerk and selling early scripts, he directed Reservoir Dogs (1992) and then Pulp Fiction (1994), which won the Palme d'Or and an Academy Award for its screenplay. Later works such as Kill Bill, Inglourious Basterds and Django Unchained cemented his style of sharp dialogue, nonlinear plots and cinephile references.

Quentin Tarantino grew up in the Los Angeles area, the son of Tony Tarantino, an actor, and Connie McHugh, and was raised largely by his mother. A restless student, he left high school in his teens and took acting classes while working at a Video Archives store in Manhattan Beach, where he spent long hours watching and discussing films across genres. That self-directed education in cinema shaped the encyclopedic movie knowledge that later defined his writing and direction.

Tarantino broke through as a screenwriter before he directed. His script for True Romance and his story for Natural Born Killers were sold and filmed in the early 1990s. His directorial debut, Reservoir Dogs (1992), a tense crime story about a botched robbery, drew attention for its sharp dialogue and brutal economy. Two years later, Pulp Fiction (1994) won the Palme d'Or at Cannes and an Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay, and its interlocking stories and pop-culture-savvy banter made him a central figure in 1990s independent film.

He followed with the Elmore Leonard adaptation Jackie Brown (1997), then the revenge epic Kill Bill, released in two volumes in 2003 and 2004, which blended martial-arts and spaghetti-western styles. Death Proof (2007), his half of the Grindhouse double feature with Robert Rodriguez, paid tribute to exploitation cinema. The World War II film Inglourious Basterds (2009) and the slavery-era Western Django Unchained (2012) earned wide acclaim, with the latter bringing him a second Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay. He continued with the confined Western The Hateful Eight (2015) and the Hollywood period piece Once Upon a Time in Hollywood (2019).

Tarantino has said he intends to stop directing after ten feature films, treating his body of work as a deliberate, finite catalog. Off screen, he has championed repertory cinema, notably as owner of the New Beverly Cinema in Los Angeles, and he married singer Daniella Pick in 2018; the couple have two children. His nonlinear storytelling, distinctive dialogue and genre-blending have made him one of the most imitated American filmmakers of his era.
