Pierce Brosnan

Brosnan grew up in Ireland and England, the only child of a father who left the family early and a mother who moved to London to work as a nurse. Raised for a time by grandparents and other relatives, he attended school in Navan, County Meath, before joining his mother in London at age eleven. He later trained at the Drama Centre London, building the skills that led to work in repertory theater and television.

After early stage and screen roles, Brosnan gained wide recognition as the title character in the American television series Remington Steele, which ran from 1982 to 1987. The show's unexpected renewal kept him from taking over as James Bond in the late 1980s, but he was cast as 007 a decade later. He married actress Cassandra Harris in 1980; after her death from ovarian cancer in 1991, he raised their son Sean along with her two children from a previous marriage. He married journalist Keely Shaye Smith in 2001, and the couple have two sons. Brosnan became a U.S. citizen in 2004 while retaining his Irish citizenship.
