Yamasaki grew up in Seattle, Washington, the son of Japanese immigrant parents. His father worked long hours in a shoe factory, and the family struggled financially. As a young man, Yamasaki spent summers working in an Alaska salmon cannery to help pay for his schooling. He studied architecture at the University of Washington, earning his bachelor's degree in 1934, then moved east to continue his training at New York University.
Early jobs in New York were poorly paid, and Yamasaki briefly considered leaving architecture altogether. He worked for established firms, including Shreve, Lamb & Harmon, before settling in Detroit, where he joined Smith, Hinchman & Grylls. In 1955 he founded his own practice, Minoru Yamasaki Associates, in Birmingham, Michigan. Projects from this period, such as the Pacific Science Center pavilion for the 1962 Seattle World's Fair and the Century Plaza Hotel in Los Angeles, displayed his signature use of decorative screens, water features, and planted plazas.
Yamasaki is most remembered for the original World Trade Center. Chosen in 1962 to design the complex, he conceived twin towers with closely spaced windows that he said would give occupants a feeling of security. The towers opened in 1973 and dominated the lower Manhattan skyline until their destruction in the attacks of September 11, 2001. His Pruitt-Igoe public housing project in St. Louis, completed in the mid-1950s, was later widely criticized and demolished beginning in 1972, becoming a symbol of failed urban renewal.
Yamasaki aimed for what he described as serenity, surprise, and delight in his buildings, often softening modernism with ornament and natural elements. He wrote about his career in the 1979 memoir A Life in Architecture. He died of stomach cancer in 1986 in Detroit.
