What Does the Name Yuna Mean?
Yuna is a given name with separate Japanese and Korean origins, and in both languages it is normally written with characters chosen by the parents. It therefore has no single fixed meaning. In Japanese, the sound yu-na can be written with many kanji combinations, among them 優奈, 由奈, 結菜, and 夕菜. The first character carries most of the sense - 優 ("tender, excellent"), 由 ("reason, cause"), 結 ("bind, tie"), 夕 ("evening") - while the second is often 奈, a frequent element in girls' names that is usually picked for its sound, or a character such as 菜 ("greens").
In Korean, Yuna is romanized from 유나, which can also be written in several hanja combinations, for example 有娜 and 侑娜. Here the first syllable supplies a meaning such as "to have" (有) or "to assist" (侑), and 娜 is a name character with the sense "graceful, elegant." Because the characters are a personal choice, a Korean Yuna and a Japanese Yuna can share a pronunciation without sharing a meaning.
A third, unrelated use is the rare Russian name Юна (Yuna), which is sometimes explained as a short form of Юнона (Yunona), the Russian form of the Roman goddess name Juno; that derivation is not certain. It has nothing to do with the Hebrew name יונה (Yona, "dove"), which is a different name that merely sounds similar.
Yuna Name History & Origins
Yuna belongs to a large group of Japanese girls' names formed from a short element plus na, written 奈, 菜, or 那. Haruna, Ayana, Nanami, and Yuina are built the same way, and names of this shape are common in modern Japanese naming. Yuna carries no legend or religious story in Japan; like most modern Japanese given names, it is assembled from characters the parents choose, and the same pronunciation can be registered under more than one set of characters.
Korean usage follows a different path. Korean given names are usually two syllables, and 유나 fits that structure. The syllables may be written in hanja or registered without hanja as pure Korean, so the written form of the name varies from person to person; the syllable 나, shared with names such as Nara and Nayeon, is part of that pattern. Japanese Yuna and Korean Yuna developed independently and only coincide in English spelling.
In English-language popular culture the name is familiar from the heroine of the video game Final Fantasy X (2001). When the game was made, Yuna was already an ordinary Japanese girls' name rather than a coinage of its writers, and the character is a use of the name rather than its source. Similar-looking names such as Una (Irish) and Yoona (Korean 윤아) are separate names with their own histories and should not be assumed to share an origin with Yuna.
