What Does the Name Xiang Mean?

Xiang is a Chinese name written in the Latin alphabet with pinyin, the romanization system of mainland China. Pinyin records sounds rather than characters, so "Xiang" can stand for several different Chinese characters, and the meaning of the name depends on which character its bearer uses.

Among the characters common in names are 祥 (xiáng), "auspicious, lucky"; 翔 (xiáng), "to soar, to glide"; and 香 (xiāng), "fragrant." Others include 湘 (xiāng), the name of a river in Hunan; 向 (xiàng), "direction, to face," also a surname; and 项 (xiàng), originally "nape of the neck," also a surname. Mandarin tones separate these words in speech, but tones are not written in the Latin spelling, so all of them appear as Xiang. The list is not exhaustive.

For the two most common name characters, the written form is also informative. 祥 is built from the radical 示, associated with altars and spirits, plus the phonetic element 羊 "sheep" - a pairing that traditional Chinese analysis ties to sacrificial offerings and good omens rather than to the literal meaning of "sheep." 翔 combines the phonetic 羊 with the radical 羽 "feather," matching its sense of flight.

Xiang Name History & Origins

Xiang came into English mainly through pinyin, adopted in mainland China in 1958 and now the standard romanization for Chinese names and places. Earlier Western writing used Wade-Giles, in which the same syllable is spelled Hsiang, so a nineteenth-century text and a modern one may refer to the same person under two different spellings. In Cantonese-speaking regions the same characters are romanized differently again - 香 appears as Heung, as in Heung Gong, "Hong Kong."

As a surname, Xiang usually represents 项 (Xiàng) or 向 (Xiàng). The best-known early bearer is Xiang Yu (项羽, 232 - 202 BC), the Chu general who destroyed the last Qin ruler's power and then lost the contest for empire to Liu Bang at the battle of Gaixia in 202 BC. His career is the subject of a long biographical chapter in Sima Qian's Records of the Grand Historian, written about a century later.

As a place and cultural name, 湘 (Xiāng) is the Xiang River in Hunan, one of the rivers that feed Lake Dongting. From the river, 湘 became the short name of Hunan province, and the Xiang group of Chinese dialects, also called Hunanese, takes its name from the region. A well-known legend links the speckled bamboo along the river to Ehuang and Nüying, the two wives of the legendary emperor Shun, whose tears were said to have spotted the stalks as they mourned him. The story is legend rather than recorded history, but it made "Xiang bamboo" (湘竹) a lasting image in Chinese poetry, and 湘 appears often in classical verse about the south.

In present-day naming, Xiang is used both as a one-character given name and as one element of two-character given names, where it is paired with another auspicious or descriptive character.
