What Does the Name Xaver Mean?
Xaver is the German form of Xavier, a name derived from a Basque surname and place name. The Basque source is Xabier, from etxe meaning "house" and berri meaning "new," with an article ending; the literal sense is "new house." Xaver is not itself a Basque name but a German adaptation of the Latinized Xaverius used for Saint Francis Xavier.
Xaver Name History & Origins
The name Xavier comes from the Basque region of Navarre. The village and castle of Xabier, called Javier in Spanish, gave a surname to the family of Francisco de Jasso y Azpilicueta, the sixteenth-century Jesuit missionary known in English as Saint Francis Xavier. He was born in 1506 at Xavier Castle, joined the Society of Jesus, and preached in India and Japan; he died in 1552 and was canonized in 1622.
In German-speaking Catholic areas, his name was Latinized as Xaverius and shortened in German as Xaver. The German form is especially familiar in the double name Franz Xaver, where Franz corresponds to Francis. Xaver is used in Germany, Austria, and Switzerland. Its German pronunciation begins with a "ks" sound, unlike the English pronunciation of Xavier.
