Branwen, daughter of Llŷr, is a central figure in the Second Branch of the Mabinogi, preserved in fourteenth-century manuscripts, and Olwen is the heroine of the tale Culhwch ac Olwen. The same element appears in names such as Arianwen. These compound names are older than any use of "Wen" by itself.
