What Does the Name Ward Mean?

Ward means "guard" or "watchman" and comes from the Old English noun weard, which named a sentry or lookout and also carried the sense of protection and custody. The same Old English word is the source of the modern common noun ward - a hospital ward, a city ward, to ward off - and it is used as a surname and, by transfer from the surname, as a masculine given name.

Two other origins for the surname are possible in individual families and cannot easily be separated in surviving records. In northern England, where Norse settlement was heavy, the Old Norse cognate vörðr ("watchman, guardian") may lie behind some instances, since it is nearly identical in form and meaning to the Old English word. Some families may instead take the name from a medieval Germanic personal name formed with the element ward- ("guardian"), used as a short form of a longer compound. Separately, Irish families named Ward usually descend from the Gaelic Mac an Bháird, "son of the bard," from bard, "poet" - an origin unrelated to the English word, though the given name Ward in English-speaking countries comes chiefly from the English surname.

Ward Name History & Origins

Old English weard is recorded both as a common noun for a watchman and as a name element. It appears in personal names such as Ēadweard (Edward, literally "prosperity-guardian") and underlies the occupational words behind the surnames Woodward, a wood-keeper or forester, and Hayward, an officer who guarded enclosures and impounded stray livestock.

The surname Ward is found in England from the Middle Ages, when bynames describing a person's work or role became hereditary. A man who served as a watchman, gatekeeper, or guard could be recorded simply as Ward, and the name passed to his children regardless of their own occupations. From England the surname spread to Ireland, Scotland, and the American colonies, and it is also long established in Ireland through the unrelated Gaelic Mac an Bháird.

Ward entered use as a first name in the English-speaking world, above all in the United States, during the 18th and 19th centuries, when giving a child a mother's or grandmother's family surname as a first or middle name was a common practice. The American clergyman Henry Ward Beecher (1813 - 1887) carried Ward as a middle name inherited from his mother's family, the Wards - an example of the surname passing into given-name use rather than a literary invention.
