What Does the Name Wali Mean?
Wali is an Arabic given name taken from the word walī (ولي), meaning "protector," "guardian," or "close friend." It comes from the Arabic root w-l-y, whose basic sense is nearness or closeness - being next to someone, and by extension standing by them as an ally or having charge over them. The plural is awliyāʾ.
Because the root joins the ideas of nearness, friendship, and authority, walī is translated in several ways depending on context: an ally, a trusted friend, a protector, or the person responsible for another's affairs. In Islamic religious usage it commonly means a person close to God, a "friend of God," and this is the sense behind the customary use of the word for a saint. That religious meaning is an extension of the word's core sense of closeness, not a separate etymology.
The name is distinct from the similarly spelled Arabic word wālī (والي, "governor," the administrator of a province). The two share the root w-l-y but use different vowel patterns and are separate words.
Wali Name History & Origins
The Arabic word walī belongs to the pre-Islamic Arabic vocabulary of kinship, alliance, and patronage, where the root w-l-y expressed closeness and the obligations that came with it. In the Quran the word appears often: God is described as the walī - protector and ally - of believers, and the plural awliyāʾ is used for protectors and allies, both divine and human. From this usage developed the Islamic idea of walāya, guardianship or closeness to God, and the phrase walī Allāh, "friend of God." That phrase underlies the later use of walī as a term for a Muslim saint, a sense that became especially prominent in Sufi tradition.
As a personal name, Wali travelled with Arabic and with Islam. It is used in Arabic-speaking countries and, in locally adapted forms, in Iran, Turkey, South Asia, the Malay world, and parts of Africa. Turkish has the cognate Veli. In Malay and Indonesian, wali means guardian, and the Wali Songo, the "nine saints," are the figures whom tradition credits with establishing Islam on Java. In South Asia the name often appears in compounds such as Wali Muhammad and Wali al-Din (Waliuddin), where the religious sense of closeness to God is the dominant one.
In Turkey and the Balkans the form Veli has been used as a given name for centuries, while in Persian- and Urdu-speaking regions Wali and its compounds are common. In parts of Muslim West and East Africa the name also appears, carried by the same religious vocabulary.
