What Does the Name Uziel Mean?

Uziel is a Hebrew name meaning "God is my strength" (also rendered "my strength is God"). It is a spelling variant of Uzziel, which appears in the Hebrew Bible as עֻזִּיאֵל. The name joins two elements: a first part from Hebrew ʿoz ("strength"), in the possessive form ʿuzzi ("my strength"), and a second part, ʾel ("God"). The meaning is a literal translation of those parts rather than a later symbolic reading; like many biblical Hebrew names, it sets a personal attribute beside the divine name El.

Uziel Name History & Origins

The name is attested in the Hebrew Bible, where Uzziel is a Levite of the Kohathite clan, a son of Kohath and a brother of Amram, Izhar, and Hebron (Exodus 6:18; Numbers 3:19). His sons Mishael and Elzaphan carried the bodies of Nadab and Abihu outside the camp at Moses' command (Leviticus 10:4), and the Kohathite branch traced to him is called the Uzzielites (Numbers 3:27). Other men in the Bible bear the same name, including a Simeonite leader (1 Chronicles 4:42), a Levite musician listed among the sons of Heman (1 Chronicles 25:4), and a goldsmith who helped repair Jerusalem's wall (Nehemiah 3:8).

The double z of the traditional English spelling Uzziel reflects the doubling of the z sound in the Hebrew form; Uziel, with one z, is a common modern spelling. Greek and Latin Bible traditions carried the name into European use in forms such as Oziel, and English translations settled on Uzziel.

From that biblical base the name has continued in Jewish naming, both in the Hebrew form עוּזִיאֵל and in transliterated spellings, and it is used as a given name in Israel and in Jewish communities elsewhere. A well-known later bearer was Ben-Zion Meir Hai Uziel, a Sephardic chief rabbi in Palestine and then Israel in the mid-twentieth century.
