What Does the Name Umit Mean?
Umit is a Turkish name meaning "hope," written Ümit in Turkish. It is the ordinary Turkish noun for hope, borrowed from Persian امید (omid), which has the same meaning. The Turkish spelling uses ü, a front rounded vowel without an exact English equivalent; the Persian final -d appears as -t in the Turkish form.
Umit Name History & Origins
The name belongs to a Turkish pattern of using common nouns, including abstract nouns, as personal names. Its history as a name follows the history of ümit in Turkish. Persian was a major source of learned and literary vocabulary in Turkish, especially in Ottoman written Turkish, and ümit belongs to that layer of Persian loanwords. Ottoman writing used the Persian-derived spelling امید; modern Turkish spells the word ümit, and the given name is usually written Ümit. Umit is the form used when the Turkish letter ü is unavailable or omitted.
The same Persian-derived word for hope also appears in other Turkic languages, including Kazakh Үміт and Kyrgyz Үмүт. In Turkish, Ümit is used as a given name and remains the ordinary noun for hope; its use as a name comes from the word rather than from a saint, a literary character, or a royal bearer.
