What Does the Name Umbert Mean?
Umbert is a masculine given name treated as a variant of Humbert, with the initial H- dropped. It shares Humbert's Germanic origin: a compound of hun- and berht. The second element means "bright" or "shining." The first element is usually explained as "warrior," giving the customary meaning "bright warrior." Some etymological accounts connect hun- instead with a Germanic word for "bear cub," which would produce a literal sense such as "bright bear cub." The conventional English gloss is "bright warrior."
Umbert Name History & Origins
The parent name Humbert developed from a Germanic compound name. It is recorded in medieval Latin as Humbertus and appears in Old French and German as Humbert. The name was used in Frankish, French, and German lands and was borne by several religious and noble figures, including Saint Humbert, an early medieval Frankish saint, and Humbert of Romans, the thirteenth-century master general of the Dominican order. Humbert I of Savoy, an eleventh-century count, is another notable bearer associated with the House of Savoy.
The Italian form is Umberto, which became widely known through the kings of Italy, Umberto I and Umberto II. Umbert follows the same pattern of dropping the initial H- that is seen in Italian Umberto, but it does not add the Italian final -o. It is a simplified variant of Humbert rather than a standard form in French, German, or Italian, where Humbert and Umberto are the usual spellings. The name Humbert Humbert in Vladimir Nabokov's Lolita is a modern literary use of the parent name, not the origin of Umbert.
