What Does the Name Ulugbek Mean?
Ulugbek is a Turkic name meaning "great prince" or "great lord." It is made from the Turkic elements uluğ ("great, mighty") and beg ("lord, prince, noble"). Beg began as a title for a chieftain or nobleman, so the compound describes high rank rather than a family relationship.
The English spelling simplifies Uzbek Ulugʻbek. The classical spelling Ulugh Beg and Turkish Uluğ Bey use the same two elements; they are variant forms of one Turkic name.
