What Does the Name Ules Mean?
Ules is a rare personal name whose etymology is uncertain, and its meaning is therefore usually given as unknown. The explanation that is sometimes offered is that it is a shortened form of Ulysses, the Latin form of the Greek name Odysseus. If that account is right, Ules would carry no separate meaning of its own, since it would be only a clipping; the meaning of Ulysses itself is likewise debated. The shortening is inferred from the resemblance of the two names rather than from any documented use, so the connection remains a suggested explanation and not a settled etymology.
Ules Name History & Origins
Ules is used as a given name chiefly in the United States. It is uncommon, and the surviving record of its use is thin, so the route by which it entered English is not well traced. The account that circulates is that it is a short form of Ulysses, a name that was in use in the United States in the nineteenth century and that also produced shortened and respelled variants. That derivation is not documented, however, and the likeness between the two names may be accidental. Without earlier or intermediate forms, the development of Ules cannot be described in any detail.
