What Does the Name Tyris Mean?
Tyris is a rare given name with no securely documented etymology of its own. It is used in English-speaking countries, above all in the United States, and it most closely resembles Tyrus, the Latin form of Greek Týros, the Phoenician city of Tyre. That place name is usually connected to a Semitic root meaning "rock," since the original settlement stood on a rocky island just off the coast. Tyris may be a respelling of that older name, or it may be a separate modern formation; the two possibilities cannot be told apart with confidence.
Tyris Name History & Origins
The traceable uses of Tyris are modern. It appears in English-language fiction as the name of Tyris Flare, the heroine of the Sega arcade game Golden Axe (1989). A character of that kind shows the name in circulation in the late twentieth century, but it does not explain where the name came from.
The older and far better attested name behind the spelling is Tyrus, taken from the ancient port of Tyre - Ṣōr in Hebrew, Týros in Greek, and Tyrus in Latin. As an English personal name it has always been uncommon; the baseball player Tyrus Raymond Cobb, born in 1886 and known as Ty, is among its best-known bearers. A spelling ending in -is fits familiar English naming patterns, but whether Tyris grew out of Tyrus or arose on its own is not clear. The resemblance to the Norse god Týr is superficial, since that name has a separate Germanic history.
