What Does the Name Tate Mean?
Tate is an English name whose meaning is uncertain. It comes from the surname Tate, which in turn comes from the Middle English personal name Tate, a form of the Old English name Tata. The sense of that older name is not recorded; it may have been a short form or pet form of a longer name beginning with Tat-. A separate strand of the surname may descend instead from the Old Norse personal name Teitr, meaning "cheerful" or "glad," which Scandinavian settlers carried to northern England and Scotland. That "cheerful" sense belongs only to the Norse name, not to the Old English Tata, and the two derivations should not be merged.
Tate Name History & Origins
The name began as a personal name in medieval England rather than as a given name in its own right. In Old English, Tata is the form behind the later surname. As inherited family names took hold in England during the later Middle Ages, Tate became established as a surname, and it is found especially in the north of England. The similar Scottish spelling Tait is often treated as a variant, but it rests on the Norse root Teitr, so the two spellings are not simply the same name written differently.
As a first name, Tate is a modern use of the surname, appearing in the United States and other English-speaking countries and used mainly for boys. Its older and better-known use remains the surname, which also stands behind the Tate galleries in Britain, named for the sugar merchant Henry Tate.
