What Does the Name Tupac Mean?
Tupac is an English spelling of a Quechua name, usually written Tupaq in Quechua and Túpac in Spanish. It is generally understood to mean "royal" or "noble." The Quechua word tupaq appears in the names of Inca rulers; in the compound Túpac Amaru, the first element is commonly rendered "royal" before amaru, "serpent." This is a customary gloss rather than a securely settled dictionary definition. Some popular accounts also give "shining," but that sense is less firmly established than the royal or noble one.
Tupac Name History & Origins
Tupaq belongs to the Quechua-speaking world of the central Andes and appears in Inca royal names. Túpac Yupanqui, a son of Pachacuti, ruled the Inca Empire in the late fifteenth century. In the sixteenth century, Túpac Amaru (1545 - 1572) was the last ruler of the Neo-Inca state at Vilcabamba; Spanish forces captured and executed him in Cusco in 1572.
Spanish writers spelled the name Túpac, using an accent according to Spanish conventions. Quechua spelling is often Tupaq, and English usually drops the accent to give Tupac. In 1780, José Gabriel Condorcanqui, a curaca from Tinta, took the name Túpac Amaru II and led a large uprising against Spanish colonial rule; he was executed in Cusco in 1781. The rebellion gave the name a lasting association with Andean resistance.
The American rapper Tupac Shakur (1971 - 1996) bore the full name Tupac Amaru Shakur, which repeats the historical name in an English-language context.
