What Does the Name Torryn Mean?
Torryn is a modern English spelling of the given name Torin, and it does not have a documented etymology of its own; whatever meaning it carries comes from Torin. The derivation most often proposed is Scottish Gaelic torr, "a hill" or "rocky peak," the word behind the Isle of Skye place name Torrin (Gaelic Na Torrain). A competing Irish explanation connects the name to torann, "thunder." These are separate proposals rather than stages of one development, so the meaning is best given as uncertain.
Torryn Name History & Origins
Torin is found in Ireland and Scotland as both a given name and a surname, and it is usually explained as an anglicized or shortened form of a longer Gaelic name, though no single source form is agreed on. The related place name Torrin, a township on the Isle of Skye, comes from Gaelic torr, a common element in Scottish topography for a hill or rocky knoll; Na Torrain is a diminutive or collective form of that word.
The spelling Torryn with a y is a modern written variation rather than an older historical form. It follows the broad English habit of respelling familiar names with y; the change reflects spelling fashion in English, not a different Gaelic or Celtic source.
