What Does the Name Thea Mean?

Thea is an English feminine given name whose first source is the Greek word θέα (thea), "goddess," the feminine form of θεός (theos), "god." The closely related Titaness name Theia (Θεία) may come from this same word, or from the adjective θεῖος (theios), "divine"; the exact link is not settled. Separately, Thea is very often a short form of longer Greek-derived names ending in -thea, above all Dorothea and Theodora. Those compound names join δῶρον (dōron), "gift," to θεός, "god," and mean "gift of God." Used as a nickname for them, Thea keeps the full name's meaning and not the literal sense "goddess."

Thea Name History & Origins

The noun θέα (thea), "goddess," existed in ancient Greek alongside θεός (theos), "god," and the related form Theia (Θεία) is named as a Titaness in Hesiod's Theogony. She was a daughter of Uranus (Sky) and Gaia (Earth) and, with Hyperion, the mother of Helios (Sun), Selene (Moon), and Eos (Dawn). Later Greek writers tied her to shining light and to the power of sight. Whether the Titaness's name and the ordinary noun thea are simply the same word or two forms that influenced each other remains a matter of debate.

In modern Europe, Thea developed mainly as a shortened form of Dorothea and Theodora, names long common in German-, Dutch-, and Scandinavian-speaking regions, where Thea is used both as a familiar nickname and as a given name in its own right. It became more common in English-speaking countries later, during the 20th century.

In literature, Thea Kronborg is the central character of Willa Cather's novel The Song of the Lark (1915). The spelling Theia also occurs, following the Greek Titaness. The similar-looking name Althea is unrelated through this element: its second part comes from a Greek verb meaning "to heal," not from thea, "goddess."
