What Does the Name Torres Mean?
Torres is a Spanish and Portuguese surname meaning "towers." It is the plural of torre ("tower"), a Romance word from Latin turris. The name is topographic or habitational: it originally identified someone who lived near a tower or fortification, or someone from a place named Torres. The literal sense is architectural; the name does not carry a separate abstract meaning in its etymology.
Torres Name History & Origins
The surname developed in the Iberian Peninsula during the Middle Ages, when hereditary family names were forming in Spain and Portugal. A person who lived by a tower or who came from a place called Torres could be recorded as de Torres, later shortened to Torres. This makes the name topographic or habitational rather than patronymic. Several Iberian places share the name, including Torres Vedras in Portugal and Torres de la Alameda in Spain; these place names come from real towers or fortified sites.
The name spread through Spanish and Portuguese settlement in the Americas, and it is common today in Mexico, Cuba, Puerto Rico, Argentina, Brazil, and other countries with Iberian colonial history. In English-speaking countries, Torres remains chiefly a family name; when it is used as a first name, it is a transferred surname rather than an inherited given name with its own independent history. That given-name use keeps the same meaning, "towers," and does not add a separate etymology.
