What Does the Name Torin Mean?

Torin is an English masculine given name whose exact origin is not settled. It is most often explained as a spelling variant of Thorin, the English form of the Old Norse name Þorinn. That Norse name appears to be a byname built from the verb þora ("to dare") plus the definite article ending -inn, so its literal sense is "the daring one," usually given in name books as "bold one." Because the first element looks like the name of the god Þórr (Thor), the name is sometimes also glossed with reference to thunder, but the verb þora is the more direct source.

A separate and less documented suggestion connects Torin with the word tor (Gaelic torr), a hill or rocky peak that appears in Scottish, Irish, and Cornish place names; on this view the name would be topographical rather than mythological. The explanations are not mutually exclusive in modern use, because Torin is also taken up simply as a current English spelling with no reference to either source.

Torin Name History & Origins

The earliest clearly recorded form behind the spelling Thorin is the Old Norse Þorinn, which appears in the Dvergatal, the catalogue of dwarves in the poem Völuspá in the Poetic Edda. The ending -inn is the Old Norse definite article, so the name reads literally as "the daring one." Such dwarf names in Norse poetry work as literary naming material, and their use as everyday personal names in medieval Scandinavia is not established.

Thorin came into modern English literature when J. R. R. Tolkien took the name, along with several other dwarf names, from that same Old Norse list for Thorin Oakenshield in The Hobbit. The spelling Torin, without the h, is a later English form of the name and is the variant more often used as a given name today. Since the Old Norse source is not widely known, Torin is frequently treated as a name in its own right rather than as a form of Thorin.
