What Does the Name Toribio Mean?

Toribio is the Spanish form of the Latin name Turibius. The origin of that Latin name is not securely known. A traditional explanation connects it with Latin turibulum, meaning "censer" or "incense burner," a word built on thus (genitive turis), "incense." If that link is correct, the name would carry the sense of "censer," but the connection is a learned association rather than a documented derivation, and other treatments simply record Turibius as a name of unknown origin.

Toribio Name History & Origins

The Latin name Turibius was borne by an early Spanish bishop, Turibius of Liébana, remembered as a fifth-century bishop associated with Palencia and Astorga. His cult was centered at the monastery of Santo Toribio de Liébana in Cantabria, which helped keep the name alive in the Iberian Peninsula. In Spanish usage the Latin form Turibius became Toribio.

The most widely known bearer is Turibius of Mogrovejo (1538 - 1606), born Toribio Alfonso de Mogrovejo in Mayorga, Spain, who became Archbishop of Lima in Peru and took part in the evangelization and church organization of colonial South America, including the Third Council of Lima. He was canonized in 1726, and devotion to him spread the name through Spanish-speaking regions.

Through these saints the name entered Spanish naming practice, where it serves mainly as a given name and occasionally as a surname. The closely related Italian form is Turibio; the name remains largely confined to Spanish- and Italian-speaking areas rather than being widely adopted in English-speaking countries.
