What Does the Name Toby Mean?

Toby is an English name meaning "God is good." It is a familiar form of Tobias, the English, German, and Scandinavian form of the Greek name Tōbias (Τωβίας). That Greek form stands for the Hebrew Toviyyahu (טוֹבִיָּהוּ), built from tov, "good," and Yah, a shortened form of the divine name. Read literally, the Hebrew elements say "good is Yah"; the customary English meaning is "God is good." Toby is simply Tobias shortened, using the common English familiar ending -y and dropping the final syllable, so it does not have a separate etymology of its own.

Toby Name History & Origins

The Hebrew name behind Toby appears in the Hebrew Bible for several minor figures, including Tobiah the Ammonite, an opponent of Nehemiah, and Tobijah in the book of Zechariah. The deuterocanonical book of Tobit, whose full text survives in Greek and Latin, tells of Tobit and his son Tobias and helped keep the name in use in Christian Europe.

In medieval England, Tobias was in use, and Toby developed beside it as a spoken short form; Middle English spelling commonly used -y- for the -i- sound, and everyday speech dropped the last syllable. By the time Shakespeare wrote Twelfth Night (performed around 1601), the familiar form was well enough known to be given to Sir Toby Belch. Toby was also the traditional name of the dog in Punch and Judy puppet shows, which spread widely in Britain in the 18th and 19th centuries. In time the short form became a given name in its own right, and it has occasionally been used for girls as well as boys.
